Working life
  • Independent writing coach since 1990. I work for people from all walks of life: read more
  • Narrative writer: from 2004, I spent several years helping Macmillan Cancer Support (a UK charity) capture the story of its work with groups of doctors, patients and nurses. This culminated in a co-authored book, "Communities of Influence" (2011).

1990 to present:  self-employed

​1987-1990: Communications Specialist with McKinsey & Company in London.

1984-7: Consumer research. Writer of reports on food, drink, public services and pollution for Which? magazine, London.

1976-83 (my Berlin years): undertook research into unemployment policy for the International Institute of Management Berlin; later moved to the Free University Berlin to do research into shiftworking; spent last two years in Berlin as a freelance journalist and translator.

1975-76: Straight out of university. Research assistant to Professor Santosh Mukherjee at Political and Economic Planning (later swallowed by the Policy Studies Institute), London
