Writing in FranceWe have a small house in France where we like to write. It's a good environment for that. We can work in peace and quiet when we need to, but we can also wander out into the garden or stroll down to the baker and will almost always find ourselves having a conversation with somebody.
The village is large enough to have two bakers, four bars, a good restaurant and a small weekly market, all a short walk from our house. It is extremely quiet and peaceful most of the time. The main exception is when the nearby church bells ring out at 7am and 7pm. Or when a dog barks, or somebody decides to mow their grass. But these are normal, discrete sounds that are part of village life. There is no incessant background traffic noise. Read what visiting writers have said about working in Charroux. Prolific writer who chose CharrouxRobert Charroux, writer of esoteric books translated into dozens of languages, with titles like "The Mysterious Unknown" (1973) or "Lost Worlds: Scientific Secrets of the Ancients", chose Charroux as his home in later life. He even adopted its name as his own. He died in 1978 and his grave in Charroux has a prehistoric standing stone on it.
